The standard ISO 9001

What's a standard ISO ?

ISO (International Organization for Standardization) is one of the largest nongovernmental organization legislating common standards at the world scales in a variety of domains. 162 countries are represented at the ISO with one delegate per country. Among these members, we found both institutions mandated by a government and sector organisms , which makes the ISO a bridge between the industrials and public authority.

But ISO foremost mission is to established "aconsensus on solutions that meet the requirements of business and ofthe broader needs of society". Indeed, elaboration of ISO standards is always based on a need clearly expressed by some applicants. The national members of ISO serve in that way of intermediaries between industries and the organization : they submit a proposition of study to the technical committee. The members of the technical committee judge the proposition according to its global pertinence , in other words according to the emergency of the demand which one it answers and the capacity to adapt it to the world scale. The ISO gather also committees in charge of elaboration of politic orientations for some domains or countries like consumers (COPOLCO), developing countries (DEVCO), etc.

The standard ISO 9001 : 2000 and the 2008 revision

The ISO 9000 family's standards treat the question ofgood practices of;quality management at an international level. Adopted in 2000, the standard ISO 9001 includes objectives of old standards ISO 9001, 9002 and 9003. The quality management requirements concern design, development production, installation and after sales service of industries.

This standard innovate regarding to its old versions in the meaning that it raises a serious and specific schema to adapt to each producer. The different processes to engage treat in a different way many organizational aspects of the company:

  • Responsibility and commitment of the direction
  • Customers focus, quality policy and human resources
  • Planning, authority and communication
  • Management and provision of resources
  • Infrastructures and work environment
  • Purchases, design and development, production and preparation to service
  • Data analysis and improvement of products

The 2008 revision bring a different perspective. Instead of sticking with purely administrative processes, it defines the qualification or competences level necessary to take a job. If it is necessary formations must be implanted . In consequences, this analysis has to be frequently renewed.

By simplifying largely the documentary procedure, the 2008 revision facilitates relocation but also the expand of a new standard ISO:2008 which is still in transition.
